Public Transit is the Way to Go!

Being a car owner and living in the city my frustration has been growing over the years. I don't think anyone is a fan of traffic or gridlock, not to mention, the cost of fuel and rising insurance premiums; make it more favourable to take public transit. Thankfully, Toronto is one of the most transit accessible cities in North America. The transit is made accessible and easy enough so that you can navigate your way throughout the city thanks to Metrolinx. Metrolinx is an agency under the Ontario government that was created to plan, build and deliver an integrated transportation network in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Region. With the merging of Metrolinx and GO transit, GO buses and GO trains are capable of moving more people in a single day. Surely, this contributes to an easier and reliable way of commuting in and around the city. It is a dependable way to link people to the GTA and to the surrounding areas by delivering mobility solutions that are seamless in integration.

Metrolinx is making it very easy for individuals like me to forget about the car. It's basically another option. You can live downtown and travel outside of the GTA comfortably with an option such as Presto that is becoming more prevalent at TTC stations now. Transit has the accessibility and convenience which makes living downtown manageable. It helps alleviate the gridlock and frustration experienced living within the GTA. It's faster, reliable, and more convenient. It's exciting to explore outside of the city and see the urban sprawl. Some of the best-kept secrets are on the outskirts when it comes to food and dining. Expansion of public transportation by Metrolinx will help alleviate congestion and make us all move better! Exciting times are just around the corner quite literally!

TTC streetcar on Bathurst line.
Improvements and upgrades to our public transit systems with Metrolinx makes for the better way in my opinion. For example the TTC has one of the most simplified grid systems for travel and it's seeing improved growth. The new UP Express and Presto systems makes it even easier to travel beyond Toronto. I can get across the city much faster via transit than on our highways in rush hours. Buses and subways makes distracted driving much less of a factor and safer way to travel. Core subway stations have built in Free WiFi which is nice & comfortable addition. Living in the city has made me really change the way I think of how I use my car and transit. It's more economical for me to use public transit especially within the city than ever before. Having that peace of mind in travel is also important. Public transit is the way to go!

Why do you love driving?

A photo posted by Joallore (@clickflick) on

Why do you love driving? It's a pretty simple question. I actually had to pause and reflect on the many reasons why I love driving. Everyday most people commute and drive to work. When you think about it we spend most of our times sitting or stuck in traffic especially if you live in Toronto like me. Many times it's hard when frustration gets the better of you when it comes to driving in these conditions. Detours, accidents and road closures are part and partial to driving but overall it has been a positive experience for me.

Driving gives you the opportunity to be free! It enables you to travel wherever you want from various distances and locations. It opens the opportunity to explore areas you may have never visited before or knew existed. I really enjoy road trips.... it conjures up old memories with friends & family in the car and playing "Punch Buggy No PunchBacks!" Do you remember this car game?

A photo posted by Joallore (@clickflick) on

Another reason why I love driving is being in control. Hence the term being in the "driver's seat." Having control of a car is an empowering feeling. The joys and comfort of steering through hairpin turns on the road and listening to your favourite tunes on the radio is just one of them. One of my favourite times to drive is by myself...no backseat noise or someone directing me to turn this way or that way. I'm able to be at peace, enjoying the car windows open, a nice breeze, and feeling relaxed until I reach my destination. It can't be more relaxing and liberating than that! Thanks to the folks at Schick, they have a cool contest & opportunity to drive free for a year! Another cool reason to drive!?!

Let's Be Frank Media Preview was Juicy!

I recently was invited to the Media Preview of a new hot dog bar called Let's Be Frank. Let's Be Frank is located in an interesting area located just north of Chinatown in Toronto at 460 Spadina Ave. It's a cool little spot located among some late night Chinese food joints and quick service chains such as Popeye's Chicken, Burger King and a 7-Elleven. It's also located next door to the infamous El Mocambo Tavern - Toronto's legendary music venue and adjacent to Kensington Market & U of T.

Left to right- Christa Muio, Julie Ford, Simon Coyler-Owners of Let's Be Frank
I had the pleasure to meet the owners of Let's Be Frank and I was curious to hear how they started in the food/bar business. The it's no secret that their complimentary skillsets from marketing, business and the general love of food and drinks would find them with a product that can't help but redefine gourmet street meat. It all started off with a food stand, progressed to a Food Truck and Pop-Up location, to the final hot dog bar they visualized since 2009. I was also curious to know what made them think they could succeed in this competitive restaurant/bar business. It all comes down to having that visual drive and an execution plan. And if you look through many of Toronto's nooks and crannies, it won't be surprising to find some sort of food hub that you would consider a hidden gem...Let's be Frank could become one of them. Co-owner Simon responded by stating that their attention to their customers and being receptive to customer needs is key and important.
Pulled Pork Po'boy
The Full Menu of hot dogs use Nathan's famous beef franks. They're considered the best hot dogs weiners. Let's Be Frank offers hot dogs in 3 different sizes: 3.5" slider / 6" regular / 8" big dog. Pictured above is the 3.5" slider pulled pork po'boy. It had pulled pork, coleslaw & hickory sticks with BBQ sauce on top. Is your mouth watering yet?!? I did make the recommendation to have their slider versions....toasted with butter to give it that little boost of flavour from the bun. That's my recommendation & hope they incorporate that in future menu iterations.

Tom Green Beer from Beau's All Natural Beer is available at Let's Be Frank

Stiegl Grapefruit Beer

The owners mentioned that they wanted a place they can just go and have a quick bite coupled with a beer. Yes, beer!! Emphasis on their beer selections is evident with a great selection from Stiegl to local Beau's Brewery. The owner did mention they have a secret drink mix menu so make sure to ask for that next time you visit. They might even have a secret hot dog menu ( wink! wink!). The staff & feel reminded me a little bit of the famous Crif Dogs in NYC.

Media Preview Night.

Bring your own records to play at the bar.

Let's Be Frank is fully licensed. They're another; different option to late night food in the Chinatown area. They encourage customers to bring in their own records to play in the bar which is a unique touch. They will also have live perfomances in the bar which bodes well since they are neighbours to El Mocambo, that will bring more late night crowds to their bar. I wish them the best since the owners are genuinely nice and down-to-earth people. It's always nice to support local. They opened quietly over the 2014 holidays and are open for business. Would you visit them or still go for street meat? Give them a try & tell me what you think. :-)

For more information: Let's Be Frank

Disclosure: I was invited to this event & given complimentary samples of the menu.

Floorplay Socks Giveaway

WIN this collection of sock. Value of $50
I remember the days when my sock choices were pretty simple; white socks and black socks. That was pretty much it. I would go to the mall or flea market and buy the 5 pack socks for like $10 only to find out that you get what you pay for. They would only last me a few weeks or i'd lose them in the dryer. You all have experienced this too, right? Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy these type of socks, but I needed to bring my sock game up and get me some style on my toes! Insert - Floorplay Socks!

Sock It To Me Socks
Recently I stumbled upon Floorplay Socks in Toronto via Twitter. It's a cool little spot that has literally thousands of different pairs of socks in different styles. It's one of the best spots to get exclusive and unique style socks from brands such as Cole & Parker, Richer Poorer, Sock It To Me and their own Floorplay private label.  One of the cool things about the Floorplay Socks is that it's a local business, based here in Toronto.  Floorplay Socks really have a great collection of styles for both men and women. If you visit during the warmer months (you remember those, right?) Floorplay Socks offers lemon water to their customers. Floorplay Socks is even dog friendly with treats for guests with pets! Nice touch, right?
FloorPlay socks is dog friendly.
The staff at Floorplay Socks are very informative and knowledgable about all things socks. For example, the staff informed me they carry a line of socks by Instance that have a silicon patch that prevents your sock from sagging down your leg at the inside of the sock opening. Isn't that an awesome feature for a sock? Overall, if you're a business man, hipster or just someone with eclectic taste, Floorplay Socks is your sock resource. They definitely have the widest collection of creative and stylish socks. Go check them out for quality and affordable stylish socks.

Checkout Floorplay Socks matching socks and Oscars outfit tweets. Cool right?

Loding Shirts and Shoes Opens in Toronto

This past weekend I had the exclusive opportunity to visit the media launch of Loding Menswear in Toronto.  Loding originated in 1998 in Paris, and now has over 70 locations around the world including Europe and Asia. The media launch this weekend was for the the first location in North America, which is located in the Yorkville area in Toronto.

Loding Menswear works on a pretty simple premise. It is a unique concept consisting of high quality menswear at one price per piece.  Every shoe in different styles are the same price ($315). All dress shirts are the same price ($95). All belts are the same price ($80). One price for every type of item and they will never have a sale or discount so the price will always be the same, ensuring you always know what to expect, financially.  For men, this simplifies the shopping experience. No hassles, just high quality products and personalized customer service in a boutique style, 800 square foot location.

All shoes are $315
Thanks to Yannick Biourdoun, owner of Nota Bene and Carbon Bar in Toronto, he has partnered with Loding Menswear to bring style and flare to menswear in Toronto. I asked him why he partnered to bring Loding Menswear to Toronto, and he told me it's all about bringing a quality product, which he has proven successful with his restaurant ventures.
