JOEY Markville $100 Gift Card Giveaway
Due to the popularity, I'm happy to announce another giveaway from JOEY Restaurants. Just in time for the holidays and the New Year, I would love to have one of my Twitter followers WIN a $100 Gift Certificate to JOEY Markville location. Read details of my experience at JOEY Markville.
In my tweets and my post, I talk more about the main food and the delicious menu items. I want to focus on the desserts this time. The photo above is one of my two favourite desserts at JOEY.
This is the baked to order apple pie, it's hand folded pastry, toasted almonds, caramel with maple ice cream. It's great for sharing, but I don't like to share this one because it's so good. :-)
My other favourite dessert at JOEY Restaurants is the Italian Donuts. It's lemon curd with vanilla mascarpone cream. It's a great treat to share with a friend or your hot date. I encourage you to try one of these selections and tell me if I'm right. JOEY Markville is a great spot to enjoy a drink with a buddy by the bar or casual dining with friends and family. Visit them over the holidays.
On that note, thanks to JOEY Restaurants they have generously given me the opportunity to giveaway a $100 gift certificate. Enter below and Good Luck. Contest is open to Canadian residents only.

Brooklyn Smorgasburg is a food market heaven.
I recently re-visited the Smorgasburg in Willamsburg, Brooklyn. It's located across the river from New York. It's my second time visiting this food fair. Admission is FREE and numerous food vendors are selling food items at reasonable prices. Lowest price: $2 drinks-Highest price: $16 lobster rolls. I enjoy visiting this market because of all the different cultural foods that are available.
One major change from last year, the location has moved 10 metres next door to an even larger area by the water. I noticed more vendors this year compared to last year. It seems to be getting bigger every year. Keep in mind that an even larger open space is adjacent to the current location. I highly recommend you visit Williamsburg and many other food markets in the NYC area. The DUMBO and Seaport food markets are on my bucket list next time. Don't stick to the obvious tourist destinations and explore some of the more obscure locations the city has to offer. I'm not going to keep on talking here and rather show you the visuals of some of the food and vendors at the market.

Chicharon is pork rinds, popular in filipino culture.

Most of the food pricing was on average $5-$7. Highest was lobster roll at $16

This is Bolivian food. It's called Saltenas. It's pastry encased in juicy stew. Similar to empanadas. Served with cheese and hot sauces. $6.00 each.

I wanted to try this but did not get a chance because I had the Bolivian Rose Petal Lemonade Soda pictured below. That was a treat!

I love the simplicity and chicness of this Indian treat.

The last 4 photos are from Bon Anchovies-Bon Jovi play on words. I tried the deep fried anchovies with dipping sauce and enjoyed it. Not the biggest fan but it was good. I think the two seafood sandwiches would have been a better choice.

It was nice to see another Filipino booth " Lumpia Shack" representing. They specialize in "Lumpia" basically a spring roll. They had different variation made fresh on the spot. It was tasty and a different take on a traditional filipino food.

This is a Persian Fusion dish? Chips with Persian yogurt and Iranian Shallots with bacon. This was very savoury. $4 bucks

This was a unique and created the most attention. It's like sticky rice in a sugar cane. Creative presentation and tasty.

It's wings from Buffalo in NYC. Nothing better than traditional Anchor Bar style wings.
I thought the "People"s Pop" was the best simple but effective vendor on the sunny, humid day at the food fair.
I hope you enjoyed my quick and rough review of my recent visit to NYC Food Market.

E11even Spring Menu Tasting

I recently was invited to the E11even restaurant to try a NEW Spring Menu Tasting that is not yet released on their menu. It was a great opportunity to sample some of the dishes and cocktails served and created by Chef Graham Pelley @E11evenChef. The New Spring menu will be available at E11even in the near future. A highlight for me was that some of the ingredients used in the dishes are local from the Mennonites and are Ontario hometown grown. It's always nice to see chefs and restaurants supporting local community.
I've always frequented Real Sports which is located next door to E11even and are owned by the same parent company MLSE which owns the Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors. E11even is more sophisticated and refined than it's counterpart of Real Sports but don't let that fool you. It's quite affordable and fair in it's pricing. For example, the 2 hotdog sliders for $5(NEW Menu item) is a great game day appetizer to enjoy before a Leafs or Raptors game.
Shareable hot dog sliders from E11even.
I'm not going to bore you with more reading and just get straight to the food porn. Check them out next time you head to the ACC or want to find a spot to enjoy the patio in the heart of Toronto.
This is my favourite offering of the tasting: Tuna Tartare
It's tuna tartare with fried shallots, a touch of sirracha, chives, chiles, cilantro and ailoi. This reminds me of Hawaiian Poke or sashimi. It's plated like a small mini cake. All tuna goodness in there.

Wedge salad with oven dried tomatoes, blue cheese and country bacon. The cheese is from a Mennonite farm.

Sweet Peas. Simple and very addictive. Great healthy snacking.

Ling cod organic fish with wild mushroom and sweet pea purée squeezed with lemon citrus.
The dishes featured here will be on the Spring Menu at E11even. I still had the opportunity to try 3 different desserts. All 3 are great, my favourite is the Oreo ice cream cookie sandwich with Tahitian vanilla. All the dessert portions are shareable. Order the Oreo ice cream cake if you don't like to share your desserts. It's good enough for one person.

Oreo ice cream cookie.

Broken banana pie: Graham crust, bananas, banana cream and whip cream.

This Pavlova Meringue was amazing. It's got a "Macaron" chewy texture to it. Very nice and light dessert.
Please give E11even a visit and enjoy the downtown patio. It's a great opportunity to try many of the menu offerings. This is a shortlist of the Spring menu offerings. They've got a gnochhi dish and Caprese salad which are amazing too! Thanks again to the E11even staff for the hospitality and great food and drinks.

New Pizzaburger from Boston Pizza
I recently had the opportunity to try the NEW Pizzaburger from Boston Pizza that just released this week into their menu (Pizzaburger Launch). The Pizzaburger is a half pound of prime rib burger wrapped in pizza dough and comes in 2 varieties. I was able to try the Pepperoni and Bacon Pizzaburger. It definitely is a complete meal option and hits the spot. It was very juicy and quite filling. One Pizzaburger order can be shared among 2 people. If you've got a big appetite this is your dish.
Steak chunks wrapped in bacon a skewer
Checking out the Boston Pizza menu, I was able to try other menu items as well that were just as tasty. I was able to try the Chicken wing nachos and steak bacon wrapped skewers. I enjoyed the latter of the two dishes. Overall I was impressed and surprised of the selections on the Boston Pizza menu. So would I order a Pizzaburger again? The answer would be yes.
I enjoyed the food at the John st/Front st location. I recommend you visit this location. It look deceivingly small from the front of the bar/restaurant but it's quite spacious with lots of big screen tvs and quite modern looking. You'll have a greater chance to visit Boston Pizza if you join my ongoing contest below in this post. Good Luck!

Joey Yorkdale Restaurant Gift Card Giveaway
Joey Restaurants recently opened a NEW location at Yorkdale Mall. Joey restaurant started in 1992 on the west coast providing customers with the best experience of casual and upscale all at once. Now they spread the love to us in Toronto.
I had the opportunity to get an advance preview of Joey Yorkdale and I was impressed upon arrival. The interiors and design layout are beautiful and inviting. It reminds me of a cool bar/restaurants I visited in Las Vegas such as LAVO and Sushi Samba. Joey has a sexy vibe and that could be contributed to the beautiful staff that seems to be consistent amongst the various locations. That will attract my attention.
The attention to detail with the charging units below the bar counter is wicked. Yes, I used the word "wicked.
Chef prepares a special sushi.
This is watermelon covered with ahi tuna with yuzu dressing.
Sushi chefs prepping the food on Media night.
Joey is more than sushi. They have a full menu here. I frequent the Joey Toronto location and they probably think i live there. My go to meal is the Ahi Tuna Club and the mashed potato spring rolls with sour cream, bacon and green onions. I recommend you visit a Joey Restaurant for a great food and great experience. Plans are being made for Sherway Mall and a Markham/Markville location in 2013.
I'm giving away a $25 gift card to get you started. To WIN just tweet me the following:

Lee Chen 1st Anniversary Tweetup
Lee Chen Bistro is 1 year old. Please join us to celebrate this milestone. Most of you have probably never heard of this restaurant or may have passed by it but never ventured in to try the cuisine. Lee Chen Bistro is nestled in a prime location in the Yorkville (Yonge and Bloor area). That location is surrounded by numerous office towers and other restaurants making this area very competitive for your disposable income.
I've met the couple that own Lee Chen Bistro and they are the most pleasant people to deal with in regards to organizing this 1 year tweetup. They have been very open-minded and open to change, but are still trying to grasp the importance of the Social Media aspect in relation to the restaurant which is a good thing. It is very fun to introduce businesses to Social Media because they're always in awe of the amplification of the tools.
So why did I organize a tweetup with Lee Chen Bistro? Here are my 10 reasons:
1-Location, location, location. They are authentic Asian cuisine that is not located in Chinatown. It's refreshing to have one in the Yorkville area and not have to go to Chinatown for Asian cuisine.
2-Most of the staff speak english. Have you ever been to Chinatown and not been able to understand the wait staff because they did not speak english? I bet you know what i mean. Being able to see your food bill itemized in english also brings a sense of relief. I do not know how to read chinese characters so I never knew if I was being charged correctly for my dishes. You won't have that problem here at Lee Chen.
3-An asian friend of mine told me to eat here and he eats at a lot of Asian places. He told me the soups and the Xioa Long Bao are pretty good and authentic. I do not know authenticity myself but the brisket and the Xioa Long Bao were really good.
4-While eating at Lee Chen for lunch one day I met @CoreCorina in person by fluke. I never met her before but knew of her online. She's knowledgable in Social Media and has worked with many restaurants in the GTA. We co-organized this celebration tweetup with simplicity and no hassles. Thanks to Orderit for being a sponsor too!
5-I've organized over 40 tweetups from small to big. I've always been a person that likes to be social and share experiences but stopped doing them because I felt anyone can do them now and that took the load off me. I didn't have to do the work anymore and I can actually enjoy tweetups myself. It's also a learning experience for me in terms of consultation.
6-The decor of Lee Chen's is actually very Asian authentic looking. There are no white plastic covered tables which is quite refreshing. In a bustling city, to have a quiet serene spot is a good thing.
7-The food is good. Yes you can have better Asian food elsewhere in Toronto but Lee Chen is up there overall with them with unique food dishes. They are responsive and being open to feedback with their menu so this shows they have flexibility and creativity.
8-It's a great little spot to have a business meeting. They also have a business menu for quick service with a very extensive wine list.
9-They are a local small business open to change and adaptability. Support local.
10-They have the good kind of fortune cookies, the more yellowy ones. If you eat in Asian restos you know what i mean!

Make it Original with Astro Yogourt

Recently I had the opportunity to attend an event with Astro Yogourt at Nella Cucina. Nella Cucina is a Cooking School and store that has a fully completed professional kitchen with everything you need to make that perfect dish. I had the opportunity to create a dish with yogourt. I'm not an expert on yogourt or food preparation but I was a little confused. I usually only have yogourt as a breakfast or lunch item with the fruit bottoms in a cup.
I learned that yogourt can be used in many more ways than my own understanding. You can use it in sauce, marinate or even make chocolate brownies out of it! The results are endless with yogourt. For more details on creative ways to use Astro yogourt, see the recipes here for more ideas: Astro
BENEFITS OF ASTRO YOGOURT:
It's made from natural ingredients
It's Kosher.
No gelatin.
Can be used for ingredients and not just for breakfast in a cup.
I invited a couple @Beachrockinc and @AmandaBlake9 to make a dish with yogourt. They made a Flanked Steak with Yogourt Chipotle dish and a Fettucini Primavera pasta dish: Flanked Steak recipeThis is the sauce made with Astro Greek yogourt for the flanked steak.
This is the Fettucini Primavera dish made with Astro Balkan plain yogourt: Fettucini Recipe
Now I made the saucy mango chicken dish above. To be honest as a person that doesn't cook very often due to my busy schedule it was simple and quick to make. If i can make it you can too! Here's the recipe. Very simple to make. Mango Chicken
This is the kitchen with all the ingredients to use.
I want to give "Thanks" to the folks at Astro Yogourt for allowing us to make tasty dishes using Astro yogourt. They even gave us these coolers with ice packs to keep our leftovers for dinner the next day!
